Here is your two-minute guide to business energy switching.

1. All the information that you need is on your electricity and gas bill – dig them out and take a look – don’t be bamboozled by the bill – help is at hand.

2. The easiest way to save money on your energy costs is to switch supplier.

3. Suppliers are bound to honour your switching without interruption to your business. Ofgem is the regulator who polices the suppliers.

4. If you are in contract with a supplier, the end-date is on your electricity and gas bill. If you are on a ‘deemed’ contract (out of contract) you will be paying on average 80% more than you should be.

6. You can go through the switching process even if your contract renewal is some time away – it may be worth switching whilst the energy markets are low.

7. There are over 25 energy suppliers to choose from including “The Big 6”.

8. Get a pot of tea (or a bucket) and call as many suppliers as possible – you will need to be in a patient mood. Don’t forget to have your bills at hand.

9. Use a switching service to gain access to the full energy market. You can do this online or via telephone. The most painless option is to share your previous electricity and gas bills in confidence.
