About the main energy suppliers

We often get asked who the main players are in th UK commercial gas and electricity market. Below we have put a quick summary together for you.

British Gas
British Gas which is part of the Centrica Group is the UK’s leading energy supplier. In Wales they operate under the name Nwy Prydain and in Scotland, Scottish Gas.

E-On
E-on is formally known as Powergen and is the World’s largest investor owned power and gas provider.

EDF
EDF stands for Électricité de France. It is owned by EDF S.A. who is the second biggest energy supplier in France.

NPower
NPower started out as National Power in 1990 after the privatisation of electricity. It is owned by the RWE Group which is the second largest supplier in Germany, and one of the biggest energy companies in Europe.

Scottish Power
Scottish Power also started out in 1990 following the privatisation of electricity. It is now part of the Iberdrola Group which is the largest energy group in Spain and one of the largest globally.

SSE
SSE is comprised of four separate brands which cover different areas of the UK. Southern Electric – England, SWALEC – Wales, Scottish Hydro – Scotland, and Atlantic covers the whole UK.

BPG Energy

British Power & Gas is a relatively new supplier in the business electricity space. Its head office is based in the North West of England and they pride themselves in giving a personalised service to customers.

D-Energi
D-Energi is a family run business who started out in 2002.

Dual Energy
Dual Energy are an independent supplier founded in 2009 who specialise in small businesses and the installation of smart meters.

Extra Energy
Extra Energy formed in 2014 and is one of the fastest growing energy suppliers in the UK. It has a German sister company called Extra Energie which was founded in 2008.

Gazprom
Gazprom is part of The Gazprom Group which is one of the biggest energy companies in the world. It began supplying gas to business customers in 2006 and then electricity in 2009.

Opus
Opus is a leading independent energy supplier that started out in 2002 as Oxford Power Holdings, changing to Opus Energy Limited in 2010.

DONG Energy
DONG energy started out in 1989, known then as Shell Gas Direct. It is the third largest gas supplier to UK businesses.

Corona Energy
Corona Energy formed in 1995 and is owned by the Australian Macquerie Group.
